Broken Rites Australia helps victims of church-related sex-abuse. By a Broken Rites researcherCatholic priest Kevin Francis Phillips, 58, appeared in court in Sydney on 5 May 2009, charged with sexual offences at St Stanislaus' College in Bathurst, New South Wales. The charges included: attempted homosexual intercourse of a student by a teacher; and a gross act of indecency. He was also charged with supplying a prohibited drug (cannabis) to a young person. The offences are alleged to have occurred at the school in 1990, when Father Kevin Phillips worked there for a few months as a priest, sports coach and part-time teacher. The school was operated by the Vincentian Fathers (this order is officially named the Congregation of the Mission). In 2009, Father Phillips was listed as the Parish Priest in charge of several parishes in Mackay, in the Rockhampton diocese, in central Queensland. Phillips appeared briefly before a magistrate in Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court. The court re-scheduled the case for further proceedings in a later date. Phillips was granted bail on the condition that he not contact any witnesses except through a lawyer. Phillips' lawyer indicated outside court that Phillips would contest the charges. The lawyer said that Father Phillips would continue to practice as a priest in Queensland. (However, after the court apperance, Queensland's Rockhampton diocese announced that Fr Phillips would stand down from parish work until the court proceedings are completed.) Father Phillips was charged by detectives from Bahurst NSW. Investigations are continuing. The Phillips case is scheduled for further court proceedings in 2010.
